    Educational content only

Motion Retirement is an educational media brand. Everything published here, including the articles, videos, guides and insights, is for general informational purposes only. It does not constitute personalized financial, tax, or legal advice and it is not a recommendation to buy, sell, or hold any security or to adopt any particular strategy.

General information cannot account for your circumstances, because your circumstances are not visible from here. Before acting on anything you read or watch, speak with a qualified professional who can see your full situation.

Before you act on a step-by-step explanation

Some articles here explain procedures: which form to file, what to ask a plan administrator, how a deadline works. Those explanations describe the general rule, not your situation. Several of the steps they describe cannot be undone once taken — a Roth conversion cannot be reversed, a missed deadline cannot be reopened, and a distribution taken in the wrong tax year stays in that year. Confirm your own facts with your tax adviser, your plan administrator, or your custodian before you act.

What Motion Retirement is, and what Define Financial is

Motion Retirement is the educational brand Josh Rendler, CFP®, publishes under. It is not a registered investment adviser and it is not a separate company. Josh Rendler is a partner at Define Financial, LLC, a registered investment adviser (CRD #286648, SEC file #801-122024). Reading anything here, subscribing, or watching a video does not make you a client of Define Financial, LLC, and does not create an advisory relationship of any kind.

Motion Retirement does not provide investment advisory, financial planning, tax, legal, or accounting services. It does not manage assets and does not enter into advisory relationships. Where this site invites you to start a conversation about your own plan, that conversation and any resulting relationship is with Define Financial, under its own agreements and disclosures.

Those are published by Define Financial, not here: Define Financial’s disclosures (opens in a new tab) and its privacy policy (opens in a new tab).

The Strategy Session form goes to Define Financial, LLC, the registered investment adviser where I am a partner. Sending it does not make you a client and does not obligate either of us to anything — it starts a conversation. The form and everything that follows are Define Financial, LLC’s, not Motion Retirement’s; its disclosures (opens in a new tab) and privacy policy (opens in a new tab) govern that relationship.

Registration as an investment adviser does not imply any particular level of skill or training.

    No guarantees

Nothing published here promises or implies a specific financial outcome. Investing involves risk, including the possible loss of principal. Past performance does not indicate future results, and no strategy can eliminate risk or guarantee a profit.

Any figures, projections, or scenarios shown are illustrative and simplified. They are meant to show how a mechanism works, not to predict what will happen to you.

About the client stories. Some of my videos are built around a household — names, ages, account balances, a decision they are facing. Those are case studies. Some are drawn from real households I have worked with, with names, numbers and identifying details changed; others are composites, built from more than one situation or constructed to illustrate a point. I do not distinguish between the two in the video, so treat all of them as illustrative. The newsletter works the same way: those stories are based on real clients, with details and personal information changed. These case studies appear in the videos themselves and in the short summaries that show up under a video’s title in search results and link previews. There is not room in a search snippet for this note, so it is here: a case study is an example, not a recommendation, and not a description of what would happen for you. Your situation, your numbers and your options are your own. Your own financial, tax, legal and investment decisions should be based on your objectives, risk tolerance and circumstances, and made in consultation with your own qualified professionals.

    Tax and legal information

Tax figures on this site are drawn from primary government publications, principally the IRS, the Social Security Administration and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and each is published with its source. They are checked on a schedule and reviewed before the corresponding figures change each year.

Even so, tax law changes and individual returns contain details a general guide cannot know about. Nothing here is tax or legal advice. Consult your own tax professional or attorney.

    Third-party links and references

This site links to third-party sites, including government publications, research firms and YouTube. Those links are provided for reference. Motion Retirement does not control and is not responsible for the content of any third-party site.

Research from firms such as Kitces, Vanguard and Dimensional may be referenced. Doing so does not imply any endorsement, affiliation or sponsorship in either direction.

    Verifying my certification

Josh Rendler is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professional. You can confirm that certification, and its current standing, with the certifying board directly rather than taking it from this page: verify a CFP® professional (opens in a new tab).

Checking that a message really came from me

Impersonation of named financial professionals is common, so it is worth saying plainly where I actually publish. Motion Retirement reaches you in three places: this website, the YouTube channel linked in the footer, and the email newsletter, which always carries a one-click unsubscribe link. My professional page at Define Financial is linked in the footer as well. Anything arriving anywhere else is not from me.

I will never contact you asking for money, account numbers, passwords, or remote access to your computer, and I will never ask you to move funds anywhere. Motion Retirement does not sell anything, does not run a private messaging group, and does not offer trading signals, an investment club, or access to a deal. A message doing any of those things is not from me no matter whose name, photograph, or credential is on it — including mine.

If something looks like it came from me and you are not sure, do not reply to it. Come back to this site and get in touch through the contact page, which is the one route I can confirm reaches me.

    Quoting and citing this material

You are welcome to quote from the articles, guides and videos published here, including in research, in a newsletter of your own, or in an answer generated by an AI assistant. Attribute it to Josh Rendler, CFP®, Motion Retirement, and link to the specific page you took it from rather than to the homepage, so a reader can check it in context.

Two conditions, and they exist for the reader rather than for me. Quote it accurately — do not edit a passage in a way that changes what it says, and do not present a figure without the date or the source that is published alongside it here, because tax numbers go out of date every year. And do not present it as personalized advice, as a recommendation, or as an endorsement of you, your firm, or any product. Republishing an entire article, or using this material to imply an affiliation that does not exist, is not covered by any of this.

This covers Motion Retirement’s own material only. It does not extend to Define Financial’s content, to video thumbnails and images, or to third-party research referenced here, all of which belong to their owners.
